a practice sequence: building a thesis

25 02 2008

The issue that I want to address in my researched essay is globalization impact on the American workforce. This issue directly affects almost every single employee in the
United States. Corporations choosing to go global are in turn cutting thousands of American jobs each year which lowers our GDP and GNI as well as leaves thousands out there with no job or assets to money. In the past others have identified globalization as both good and bad. Good because it lets Americans specialize in what we do best and trade for everything else. Making us have a comparative advantage in the things we do best in the
United States such as agriculture and financial services. Bad because it costs American jobs and ethical issues about foreign labor laws and environment issues. There are many different perspectives as to if globalization is good or bad for
America. Along with these many different perspectives there is also some misunderstanding of the concept of globalization. Some people don’t really understand what exactly it is and how it affects oneself. In order to write a paper I will need to identify what globalization is and explain how it is practiced through examples, and academic sources. At this point in time my stance on the issue is it is negative but I still need to do some more research before I determine my stance because I am left open for persuasion to change my thinking.

Essay 3 topic

After thinking all weekend about possible topics to write essay three on I have arrived at one that is very interesting to me. Globalization is a trend occurring all over the world. This phenomenon is affecting how people live, communicate, work, and socialize all over the world. It is mainly European and Asian countries changing their customs to that of western culture. I’m very interested in this topic because for me personally I will be entering the “real world” soon where I will be on my own and have my own career. Globalization directly impacts what tasks I will take on in society, what costs I will have for products, and the overall style which we live in. For example globalization is a tool that helps bump up economies of a particular region. With globalization come free trade, and the removal of tariffs. It helps countries specialize in what they do best and get the most from its scarce resources and trade for al the rest. Globalization does not only affect the economy but politics, and social values as well. This interests me because with globalization quickly spreading will this mean my job may be in jeopardy? If companies move plants over sees due to lower labor costs what will this do to me? Will I have a secure job in five years? It seems like we are just cutting more and more jobs everyday and outsourcing our manufacturing. The question I want to attempt to answer is why has globalization spread so quickly and how has that occurred. My audience will be American policy makers. I will try to persuade them it isn’t a good idea to continue cutting jobs out of our economy and shifting them over seas to countries with poor labor laws and low wage workers.

homework

After completing essay one I was very relieved! Now I have a new challenge ahead of me with essay two. Essay two will be more difficult than essay one. To make this essay better than essay one, I’m really going to have to work on synthesis since that is the major writing concept in this essay. I will also have to outline my own essay this time instead of having one already. I am writing in a different style in for this essay. I set my whole paper up as a counter argument and rebuttal. I’ve never tried this before and it has been challenging thus far. One major thing I need to work on in this essay is audience appeal. I need to continue to make sure I make my audience clear throughout my paper. I believe essay 2 is taking essay one a step further by connecting current themes to our sources which we read and creating questions which we attempt to answer in our essay.

The Writing Process

12 02 2008

Writing a well developed essay is a process which takes many steps. In the textbook From Inquiry to Academic Writing they offer a process which will help you write an exceptional essay. I have taken some of the steps that the textbook offers and applied it to my own writing. For instance I start by annotating the material I read and try to search for some common themes. Once I put together some themes I try to come up with an arguable thesis statement. I then begin to come up with main points to create the body of my essay. Each main point I try to use examples and then tie them into my thesis some how. The writing process in From Inquiry to Academic Writing is an effective process and really helps me when I am outlining my essay.

“Real World” synthesizing

10 02 2008

Many times throughout my young adult life and my childhood I have used synthesizing many times without even knowing it. For instance when I was eleven years old for family vacation I really wanted to go to Universal Studios in Orlando but my parents wanted to go to Disney World again! Now don’t get me wrong I loved Disney World but I had just been there two years ago I was ready for something new, I wanted to go on some more thrill rides and experience the stunts that Universal Studios does that are just like the movies. In order to persuade my parents to go to Universal instead of Disney World I was going to have to work hard and prove that Universal Studios would be a good vacation for the whole family. First I got online and printed off fun activities that would be going on at Universal Studios at the time we would be on vacation. For example a new Spiderman ride was opening as well as a toy story ride. I love Spiderman and my little brothers were big fans of Toy Story. My Mom and Dad were big movie critics and liked the special effects behind the movies. At Universal Studios they take you inside the making and stunts of movies such as twister, die hard, and jaws. That won some points with my parents. Another thing I did was got a Universal Studios vacation DVD. I played the DVD for my family and pointed out all the fun things we could do during the week as well as pointed out a few hotels we could possibly stay at. After watching the DVD and showing my parents pictures online and activities that would be going on during the time of out scheduled vacation my parents finally gave in. My family realized how much fun Universal would be for the whole family and that spring we had a blast in Orlando Florida at Universal Studios. It was a vacation I will never forget.

Chapter 16

5 02 2008

Chapter 16 gets into depth with technology and how it affects consumer culture. It puzzles me how beneficial technology is to not only day to day interactions between people but also the benefits it has to large corporations to increase their own profits. I’m curious as to how this phenomenon has come about. And will this increasing trend in relying on technology make Americans lazier? I believe that technology is very beneficial to Americans today in both a positive and negative way. It is a good tool that can be used to help yourself and others but at the same time it can be used to take money out of peoples pockets and put them into large corporations which I believe is wrong.
